5. Bird Feeding
Now’s the time of year when you start to hear the birds singing again. Have students research which birds are native to your area, as well as what kind of feed they prefer, in this awesome spring STEM activity.
Set up bird feeders in different locations around your school’s campus with different kinds of seeds at each. Have students regularly measure the amount of activity at each of the feeders. Are some seeds more popular than others? Do different kinds of birds like different seeds? Are there aspects of the local ecology that would attract some species more than others? What role do the species observe play in the local ecosystem?
Bonus: The school yard will be full of beautiful birds looking for a snack!
