STEM books8. Ticktock Banneker’s Clock

By Shana Keller

Grades: 1-4

A free black man born in 1731 Maryland, Benjamin Banneker excelled in STEM, particularly mathematics. These abilities allowed him to construct his own striking clock and design celestial maps that he published in his own 18th-century almanacs, launching him into the category of one of America’s most important innovators. Using recent almanacs, ask students to brainstorm regarding how they think this information would be useful and important to STEM.
