As long as the sun shines, solar power is a limitless resource on Earth. Unlike the turbines used to harvest wind power, solar is completely silent and becoming less expensive. And although solar energy may not be accessible during certain weather conditions, it is still typically more regularly available than wind. One of the downsides of solar energy is that it requires a higher power density compared with other renewable energy sources, such as hydrologic power.

There are so many DIY solar projects to be found, it’s difficult to find a place to start. Putting together a solar-powered radio can be done with just a solar panel and a radio that runs on four AA batteries. Used for camping or hiking, it’s a good example of the kind of device that works well with solar power. Full directions can be found here.
